Chihtuci, located in the East District of Hsinchu, is now a bustling commercial area of National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), but it was once home to a high-tech military factory, which also served as the birthplace of the Hsinchu Science Park. Even as people and events continue to dissipate and fade, their stories remain silently sealed within the strata of history.
Inspired by the mystery of the Hsinchu Sixth Fuel Factory, these images explore the factory site. By interweaving stories from the pre-war, post-war, and contemporary eras, they attempt to balance the discussion between the site’s history as both an industrial factory and a military dependents’ village, possibly sparking dialogue between the two. Through the collection of spatial images, historical information from the fuel depot, and memories of former employees who worked and lived there, the narratives of different aspects of the site are interconnected through a blend of images and sounds, coinciding with their representation in space.
The film also documents the ongoing preservation efforts of the underground fuel depot, capturing the challenges faced in preserving the cultural heritage still present in the Sixth Fuel Factory. Many memories and histories remain to be documented and shared, and we hope that the construction of narratives connecting the post-war fuel depot to the Hsinchu Sixth Fuel Factory will continue to unfold.

The Catalyst Plant is one of the few remaining relics of the Sixth Fuel Factory, yet it is also the site with the least available historical data. The impending urban renewal and development of the Catalyst Plant, combined with the gradual scattering of individuals who hold pertinent memories, have made research on this site increasingly challenging. Future generations will find it even more difficult to understand the full framework and value of the Sixth Fuel Factory system.
The cinematographer is racing against time to collect oral histories and record footage, striving to reconstruct the historical context of the Catalyst Plant through historical document retrieval, interviews, and field cinematography before the memories and traces associated with the site disappear. These efforts will serve as a foundation for exploring issues concerning the cultural heritage value and preservation of the Catalyst Plant.

Progress in land development means that the historical landscape and the traces of memory contained within this land will also gradually disappear. Aerial images are employed to shift the perspective from meticulous ground-level exploration to the expansive heights of a panoramic bird’s-eye view. Adopting a third-person perspective, this approach provides a comprehensive observation of the various sites of the Sixth Fuel Factory and their spatial distribution, allowing a deeper understanding of the key connections between these individual spaces.
