The development of the Zhudong Oil Field began under Japanese colonial rule. In 1924, petroleum was discovered along the hillside of Shangping River in Zhudong, attracting the attention of the Government-General. In 1926, a large gas explosion revealed the abundant natural gas reserves in the area. In 1927, the Mining Division of the Bureau of Colonial Production under the Government-General of Taiwan conducted a geological survey, leading to the discovery and naming of the Yuandongzi anticline. In 1933, Taiwan Mining Co., Ltd. acquired the mining rights and began natural gas production, ultimately reaching a cumulative output of 400 million cubic meters. After Taiwan’s liberation in 1945, the CPC Corporation took over the mine, continuing mining operations and implementing technological improvements to drive energy development.
Mr. Zhen-Lie Lin played a pivotal role in this history. Born in 1927, he studied at the Imperial Petroleum and Mining School in Japan, later joining the Taiwan Oil Field Exploration Bureau after the war. He worked for many years at the Zhudong Drilling Rig Maintenance Factory, where he was responsible for machinery maintenance and management. Not only did he document the development of the Zhudong Oil Field, but he also preserved this valuable history through his photography and compilation of documents. Even after his retirement, Mr. Lin remained passionate about sharing stories from the industry and passing on the history of energy development. Throughout his life, he witnessed the rise and fall of the Zhudong Oil Field, offering one of the most representative interpretations of this historical period.
